Fishing in Windham Maine

Windham Maine is a large town located in Cumberland County. In 2020, it has a population of almost 18,500 people, and an area of just over 50 square miles -- with just over 3.5 square miles under water!

European settlers in the mid-1700s named the town Windham after the town of Wymondham, located on England's east coast. The settlers found that the land, once cleared, was arable, and the Presumpscot river waterfalls were excellent sites for water-powered mills.

The mighty Presumpscot river flows from its headwaters in Sebago Lake, Maine's deepest and second-largest lake, through the town of Windham on its way to the sea in Portland. The Pleasant river joins with the Presumpscot in Windham as well. The Cumberland-Oxford Canal was completed in 1832, with locks constructed around the falls. The canal was in heavy use to move goods between Sebago Lake and Portland until it was supplanted by the coming of the railroad.

All that river and lake frontage today makes for superb kayaking and excellent hiking, especially on the Sebago to the Sea Trail. The trail is approximately 28 miles, beginning at Sebago Lake and ending at Casco Bay, following the path of the Presumpscot River much of the way.

The elementary and middle schools in Windham Maine combine in Grade 9 with the adjacent town of Raymond to form RSU 14. Higher education is nearby at the University of Southern Maine in Portland, at St. Joseph's College in next-door Standish, ME, or the oceanfront campus of Southern Maine Community College.

Fair in Windham MEWhen school is out, families enjoy going to Windham's year-round fun spot, Seacoast Adventure. And when fall is in the air, it means only one thing in Maine -- county fairs! One of Maine's best, the Cumberland County Fair, is held annually in late September/early October, just over the border from Windham.

Living in Windham means living in the best of all worlds -- open fields, flowing rivers, blue lakes, along with easy access to shopping and other development along Roosevelt Trail. Portland, Maine's largest city, is only 11 miles away. Windham real estate includes gorgeous lakefront property along Jordan Bay at the southern end of Sebago, and the shores of Little Sebago Lake beckon as well.
